5 Best Practices for Swagelok Quick-Connects

By following some basic best practices, your Quick-Connects can last longer

Swagelok Quick-Connects come in a variety of series and designs, including multiple end connections. The QC series offers the option of either a Single- or Double-End Shutoff. Single-ended shutoff (SESO, designated by an S in the part number) have no valve and remain open when the fitting is uncoupled. Double-end shutoff (DESO, designated by a D) have a valve and therefore shut off when uncoupled. 

1. Prevent seal damage

Using filtration ahead of the quick-connects is a good idea because quick-connects often contain valves with seal materials that can be damaged by particulates in system fluids. A filter will prevent these particles from passing through and extend the life of the fitting.

2. Protect the body and stem

When a quick-connect is uncoupled, it is a good idea to use a dust cap or body and stem protector to close off the fitting. Protectors and dust caps are both available with lanyards to ensure they remain with the component that requires protection.

3. Couple carefully

When coupling quick-connects, the stem and body should always be properly aligned. Never rotate the quick-connects while they are coupled, and never insert foreign objects into uncoupled bodies or stems. They should also be coupled and uncoupled at room temperature.

4. Prevent side load

Misalignment and side load are some of the most common causes of quick-connect failures. If a hose or other component is very heavy, it can wear out the seals unevenly and cause premature failure. The rigidity of a hose can cause a greater risk of misalignment, so a more flexible hose is a good way to prevent side load.

5. Re-lubricate

Most Swagelok quick-connects use either a silicone or PTFE based lubricant. Always relubricate stem seal o-rings or seals periodically, especially after cleaning operations.
