Protect Your Fluid Systems: First Step to Winterize

You have a long list of tasks that demand immediate attention. Can't preparing for low ambient temps wait? Possibly—it depends on the results of rigorously inspecting your fluid systems.

Sub-zero temperatures in central and northern Alberta can last from October to late May, with temperatures often dropping to -40°F (-40°C). Winterizing fluid systems protects people and assets from cold weather hazards, and the first step in annual winter preparations is self-assessment. We have a checklist that can help you think through the issues:

Among other things, you'll be asked whether any of the conditions in bullet points below apply to your processes. Winterization techniques are critical in these types of cases—and mitigation can take more than a few weeks:

  1. Pour point or freezing point is above the lowest possible ambient temp
  2. Deposition of crystals, hydrate formation, or phase separation will occur at any temp
  3. Ice forms due to pressure reduction of moisture-bearing bases
  4. Viscosity gets so high that inadequate flow occurs at ambient temp
  5. Condensation leads to the formation of corrosive compounds
  6. Lines that are typically dry (like flare or exhaust) retain moisture at startup/stoppage

Best time for self assessment: May-June

A mechanical engineer in the office goes through an inspection checklist for an oil pipeline-1-1-1We recommend looking hard at your situation in the May or June time frame because projects to mitigate risk can then take place July through September. With a three-month window, your team will have some flexibility with respect to allocating resources and scheduling work.

In an upcoming article, I'll discuss the option of getting a Swagelok Winterization Evaluation in summer. With decades of experience examining Alberta plants' fluid systems, we can help catch cracks, corrosion, and other defects that could worsen during freezing temperatures. Then, based on the inspection findings, we can recommend maintenance and repair procedures.
